Manila Mayor Isko Moreno: “Both of us uphill ang battle namin but no matter what Isko-Doc Willie ako.”
Willie Ong is Moreno’s running mate in the 2022 elections, while Mayor Sara is the running mate of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Moreno said that he’s still campaigning for his running mate even if several local politicians have endorsed him with a different vice-presidential candidate.
“Both of us uphill ang battle namin but no matter what Isko-Doc Willie ako,” Moreno told ABS-CBN News in a text message.
Moreno’s statement came after Ong released a video clarifying his earlier interview with ABS-CBN News where Ong admitted that he was “hurt” when some camps decided to carry Moreno’s candidacy but not his.
The doctor-turned-politician was noticeably absent from Aksyon Demokratiko’s 3-day sortie in Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato, wherein local officials are supporting the Davao City mayor for vice president.
Moreno told reporters there that his running mate wasn’t able to come because of a scheduled interview in Quezon City.
The pick-up truck Moreno used for his motorcade in Maguindanao was peppered with posters showing the faces of Mayor Isko and Mayor Sara. Aside from this, the posters bore the logo of the Isko-Sara Movement, a group pushing for “Isko-Sara” tandem in the upcoming May 2022 national and local elections.
Aksyon Demokratiko chairman Ernest Ramel said in a recent press conference that several groups, especially from Mindanao, have committed to backing Mayor Isko’s presidential bid, but are rooting for Mayor Sara.
Ramel also said that Aksyon’s allies in several areas have their own reasons, but Aksyon Demokratiko stands by its political candidates.
To recall, Mayor Sara said last month that while she continued to respect their decision to support another presidential candidate in the 2022 elections, she can’t be one with them on the matter because it’s important for her to honor her word.
“Mahalaga po sa akin ang paninindigan at isang salita. Alam ko po na pareho ang ating mga adhikain para sa ating bansa,” Mayor Sara said at that time.
