It was in July when he said that he is considering running for the highest position in the country or being reelected. At the time, he stressed that he would not gamble again for a vice-presidential seat.

He said he’s considering seeking the presidency, citing the proliferation of online casinos and cockfights.

But on the first day of filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (COC), the representative of Taguig–Pateros’s 1st district declared that he would not run for the country’s highest post in the 2022 national elections.

In a radio interview, Cayetano said: “Hindi po tayo tatakbo bilang Pangulo ng Republika ng Pilipinas ngayong 2022 so that po maging open din ‘yung lines ko.”

Meanwhile, the filing of COC kicked off today, October 1 and it will end on October 8.

Among those who have announced their presidential bid are Senators Manny Pacquiao, Ping Lacson, and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno.

While those who seek a position in the Senate are Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Former Vice President Jejomar Binay, Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez, and Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

On the other hand, those who have shown interest in running for the 2022 elections in the vice-presidential slate are Senator Tito Sotto and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

The campaign period for nationally-elected positions will kick off on February 8, 2022, until May 7, 2022 and the election is scheduled to be held on May 9.
