Rappler’s Maria Ressa Pleads “Not Guilty” To Tax Evasion Cases Against Her

RAPPLER’S MARIA RESSA – The chief executive officer (CEO) of news website Rappler pleaded “not guilty” to tax evasion charges filed against her.

It is no secret to the public that Maria Ressa is facing a lot of charges now. It was just last month when the Court gave its verdict on the Cyber Libel case against her.

The same case was filed against Reynaldo Santos Jr., a former researcher of news website Rappler. It was due to an article published in 2012 linking a businessman to former Department of Justice (DOJ) Chief Renato Corona.

Businessman Wilfredo Keng filed charges against Ressa and Santos over it. Last month, the Court found the two (2) of them guilty.

Rappler was found not guilty over the Cyber Libel charges. Ressa and Santos were ordered to pay Php 200,000.00 for exemplary damages and Php 200,000.00 for moral damages.

Aside from the Cyber Libel charges, Rappler’s Maria Ressa is also facing tax evasion charges. It is over allegations of falsified tax returns.

Based on a recent report on GMA News, Rappler’s Maria Ressa announced that she pleaded “not guilty” to the tax evasion charges against her.

According to the report, Ressa tagged the charges against her as a form of “harassment”. Undeniably, the issues she’s facing became a concern of many other fellow journalists.

The Rappler CEO was sentenced to imprisonment of up to six (6) years for libel. The 56-year-old journalist posted bail.

  1. Your title is a click bait. The title made it sound that somehow the verdict was reversed to “not guilty”. You should have included the word “plead” somewhere in the title.
