According to Hidalgo’s family, he died at his home in Marseille due to “natural causes”. He was 87 years old.
In a statement, Noel Le Graet, the president of the French Football Federation, said that Hidalgo was “one of the great names” in France when it comes to football, adding that he assisted in raising the standing of football “internationally and its popularity” in France through his passion, philosophy, and personality.
Hidalgo was responsible for winning France in the Euro 84 championship against Spain in 1984. It was his team’s first success in a major tournament.
