President Duterte on his successor: “Of the good qualities of the president, sana abogado.”
PRESIDENT DUTERTE — Here’s what the Philippine President said about the good qualities of his successor as he nears the last quarter of his 6-year term.
President Duterte said in an interview with Pastor Apollo Quiboloy that he thought the electorate should look for these qualities when casting their vote in the 2022 elections on May 9.
According to the President, his successor should be a lawyer who is decisive, compassionate, and a good judge of character.
“Ang — ‘pag ganoon, huwag kang matakot but — basta kaila… Ang ano nga is, hindi naman ako nagsabi it’s the best quality, but one of the good qualities of a president sana abogado,” the President said. “Isang tingin mo lang maka-decide ka na kaagad, and the repercussions, alam mo na kung ano.“
The President has not endorsed any presidential candidate for the 2022 elections, and Malacañang said that the President might “stay neutral” up to the last minute.

Communications Secretary and acting presidential spokesman Martin Andanar said on March 10 that the President is working hard to ensure the smooth transition of power to his successor in the Palace so that the next president will not have a hard time dealing with the challenges that face the country.
“Gagawin ng Pangulo ang lahat para ang transition ay smooth at hindi mahirapan ang susunod na gobyerno na harapin ang mga bagong hamon,” Andanar told Super Radyo DZBB. “Iyong mga hamon na nanggagaling sa… iyong mga external factors katulad ng giyera sa ibang bansa na nakakaapekto sa ating ekonomiya.”
Last month, the President said that he has been preparing to leave the Palace, the official residence of the Philippine president.
The President said that he has been packing his belongings to move out by March, months before his term ends on June 30.
Meanwhile, Andanar earlier said that the President is not endorsing any presidential candidate for the 2022 elections but may change his mind if there’s a “compelling reason” to do so.
The acting Palace spokesman also defended the remark of President Duterte to choose an Ilocano leader when his term ends during his recent speech in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur.
