Meanwhile, Rodrigo Duterte served as the 16th President of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022. Hailing from Mindanao, he was the first president from that region and assumed office at the age of 71.
Duterte’s political career began after a legal background; he studied political science and law before working as a lawyer and prosecutor. His political journey led him to become the mayor of Davao, a position he held for over 22 years, during which he transformed the city into a safer and more attractive place for investors.
As president, Duterte launched a controversial war on drugs, focused on crime, corruption, and insurgency, and pursued economic reforms and infrastructure projects. He attempted to shift to a federal system of government but faced setbacks. His presidency was marked by significant events, including the burial of Ferdinand Marcos, the Battle of Marawi, and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Duterte’s tough stance on extrajudicial killings garnered support but also drew criticism for human rights violations. He withdrew the Philippines from the International Criminal Court and did not disclose his assets. Despite controversies, he maintained popularity throughout his term, becoming one of the most favored post-EDSA presidents in Philippine history.
