Woman Falls to Death in Brazil Bungee Jump Tragedy
BRAZIL – A 21-year-old woman tragically died in a shocking bungee-jumping accident after she was reportedly allowed to jump without being properly connected to the required safety cables.
The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, took part in a bungee-jumping activity from a bridge in Cordeirópolis, São Paulo, on June 13, 2026. The bridge was approximately 40 meters (131 feet) high.
Videos recorded from different angles captured the incident. The footage showed three instructors preparing and lifting the young woman before the jump. Witnesses later noticed that she appeared to have no safety rope attached. Several people reportedly screamed in alarm when they realized the mistake moments after she was released from the bridge. The videos quickly spread online and raised serious concerns about safety checks and staff accountability.
Authorities launched an investigation and detained three of the six instructors involved in the activity. During questioning, the instructors reportedly struggled to explain exactly what had happened. According to their statements, the team did not follow a clearly defined division of responsibilities when checking the equipment. Instead, safety inspections were often shared among different staff members, with several people sometimes handling or reviewing the same tasks. Because of this system, none of the instructors could clearly identify who was responsible for ensuring that the victim was properly secured before the jump.
Investigators believe the accident may have resulted from a serious failure in safety procedures. Police are now considering possible criminal charges related to negligence. The instructors’ lawyer explained that his clients remain deeply affected by the tragedy and are having difficulty recalling the events. He also noted that they had been conducting bungee-jumping activities for many years and had never experienced a similar accident before.
In addition to examining the safety failures that led to the fatal jump, authorities are also investigating the disappearance of the victim’s camera, which she was reportedly carrying during the activity. The device has not yet been recovered.
