Ateneo Confirms Resignation of Tab Baldwin Following Student-Athlete Tragedy
TAB BALDWIN – The veteran basketball coach has officially stepped down as head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles following the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili. The resignation was confirmed by Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto Yap, SJ, who stated that Baldwin voluntarily relinquished his position while investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
The decision comes as the university conducts a fact-finding investigation into the tragic team-building activity held in Dipaculao, Aurora. The inquiry was ordered by Ateneo’s Board of Trustees as part of a broader review of the events and the safety protocols implemented during the activity.
University officials expressed their appreciation for Baldwin’s years of service and contributions to the Blue Eagles basketball program. However, they noted that a change in leadership was necessary as the institution reassesses its sports programs, safety guidelines, and overall management. The university underscored the importance of reviewing its systems and strengthening safety measures to ensure that student-athletes are adequately protected and supported in a secure environment.

The resignation represents a significant development in a case that has drawn considerable public attention. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding accountability, supervision, and safety standards in activities involving student-athletes.
Meanwhile, Baldwin and three other members of the Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team’s top management failed to attend a scheduled meeting with officials from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG). In response, the DILG announced that new subpoenas will be issued, requiring their appearance before investigators on June 19.

As the investigation continues, both university officials and government authorities are working to establish the facts of the incident and determine any potential lapses in responsibility.
