Coach Tab Baldwin Issues Emotional Apology Following Deaths of Two Ateneo Athletes
Four days after the deaths of Ateneo Blue Eagles players Rene Baterbonia, 19, and Divine Adili, 21, during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, head coach Tab Baldwin publicly spoke about the tragedy for the first time.
In a video released by Ateneo de Manila University on June 12, Baldwin expressed deep sorrow, apologized to the families, and said he felt responsible for the incident. He admitted that he believed he failed not only as a coach and leader, but also as someone trusted with the safety and welfare of his players.
Speaking at the Ateneo basketball court, Baldwin described being overwhelmed with grief and regret. He said the pain felt by the families was far greater than what the team was experiencing, since the parents had lost children they would never see or speak to again. He added that no loss within the team could compare to the suffering of the families left behind.

Baldwin emphasized that coaches are responsible not only for developing athletes but also for ensuring their safety. He said he regretted not fulfilling that duty and apologized for failing to protect the players who had dreams of becoming professionals.
He also recalled the incident, saying the team believed they were doing a routine training activity in shallow water. When danger became clear, everyone tried to act quickly to save the players, but despite their efforts, two lives were lost. He described the moment as deeply shocking and one of the darkest experiences of his life.

The coach added that he also felt he failed to support the rest of the team after the tragedy. In the following days, he turned to prayer for strength and asked for healing for the families affected. He also encouraged others to continue praying for comfort and peace.
As investigations continue, Baldwin remains on leave along with team staff to ensure a fair review of the incident. He ended by expressing hope that the community will find healing, unity, and forgiveness while honoring the memory of the two young athletes.
