Father of Ateneo Athlete Divine Adili Calls for Answers After Son’s Death

The family of Divine Adili is seeking justice and clear answers following the tragic death of the young Nigerian athlete during a team-building activity with the Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team in Dipaculao, Aurora. Adili, a promising basketball player who came to the Philippines to pursue his career and support his family, was described by his loved ones as hardworking, determined, and full of ambition.

His father expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling the incident a tragedy that should not have happened. He said his son proudly represented Nigeria in international competitions and always gave his best both in sports and in life. The family believes the circumstances surrounding his death must be fully investigated, and accountability should follow if negligence is proven.

His mother also shared her grief, saying the family is struggling to understand what truly happened. She stressed that they have not yet received a clear explanation and continue to seek full transparency regarding the events that led to his death. For them, knowing the truth is essential for healing and closure.

The family described Divine as their main source of hope, a young man with big dreams who worked hard to build a better future for himself and his loved ones. His sudden passing has left them devastated and searching for answers.

To better understand the cause of death, the family has requested an autopsy. His remains are currently in Quezon City while authorities wait for the results and prepare arrangements for his return to Nigeria. A candlelight vigil and prayer service are also planned in his honor, allowing friends and supporters to pay tribute to his life.

Divine Adili and his teammate Rene Baterbonia both died in a drowning incident during the same team-building activity on June 8. As investigations continue, the Adili family remains focused on seeking truth, accountability, and justice for their son.
