Family of Divine Adili Requests Autopsy Before Repatriation
CHUKWUEMEKA DIVINE ADILI — The family of the Nigerian student-athlete who played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles men’s basketball team has requested an autopsy before his remains are returned to Nigeria.
The request was confirmed by the Nigerian Embassy in Manila, which said it has been closely coordinating with Adili’s family, Ateneo de Manila University, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant authorities. The embassy is also providing necessary assistance and support as preparations continue for the eventual repatriation of his remains.
Adili, 21, and fellow Ateneo player Rene Baterbonia, 19, tragically drowned during a team-building activity held off the coast of Dipaculao, Aurora. Both were considered promising young athletes whose deaths have deeply affected their families, teammates, and the wider basketball community.

As investigations continue, the Department of Justice has directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a thorough, comprehensive, and impartial probe into the incident. Authorities aim to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths and whether there is sufficient basis to file any charges. The government emphasized its commitment to establishing the facts and ensuring that justice is served.
Initial findings from police investigators have shown no signs of foul play. Statements from lifeguards and emergency responders indicated that no unusual injuries, bruises, or objects were found on the victims when they were rescued and given first aid.

Investigators also revealed that the team-building activity took place around 300 meters away from the shoreline, despite reported recommendations from resort management to stay within a safer and shallower area directly in front of the resort. According to authorities, the group preferred to conduct the activity privately and requested minimal interference. While the investigation remains ongoing, officials continue to gather evidence and testimonies to gain a clearer understanding of the events that led to the tragic loss of the two young athletes.
