JAKE ZYRUS – The singer formerly known as Charice Pempengco gained attention on social media not for his singing performance, but due to comparisons made by some netizens to a late actor. In Facebook comments, a trend emerged where Jake was likened to Berting Labra.
Berting Labra, whose real name is Roberto S. Labra, was a talented Filipino actor known for his versatility in both comedy and drama, as well as action films and musicals. He began his acting career at a young age and appeared in numerous films alongside Fernando Poe Sr., including “Palaboy ng Tadhana” and “Sagur,” after being discovered for his singing ability by Poe Sr. at just six years old.
Labra’s life was marked by tragedy when he witnessed his father, Francisco Labra, being killed by Japanese soldiers during the war. Following this, Fernando Poe Sr. became his guardian, forming a strong bond between them.
Despite facing challenges, including a period of imprisonment with fellow actor Eddie Fernandez, which he was later cleared of, Labra continued to act in films spanning several decades. From his early roles in movies like “Lo’ Waist Gang” to later works such as “Manong Gang” and “M.O.N.A.Y ni Mr. Shooli,” Labra’s talent endeared him to audiences and earned him awards.
Unfortunately, Labra passed away on February 10, 2009, at the age of 75, due to a heart attack. His contributions to Filipino cinema continue to be celebrated, and he remains a beloved figure in the industry.
