Compilation of Michael Jordan’s Sneakers Achieved Record-breaking Sale of $8 Million in An Auction
MICHAEL JORDAN – Iconic basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s sneaker collection achieves an unprecedented $8 million at auction, establishing a new record.
On Friday, a set of six individual sneakers worn by NBA champion Michael Jordan was auctioned at Sotheby’s for $8 million, establishing a new record for the highest price ever paid for game-worn sneakers.
This surpasses the previous record set in September 2022 when Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 jersey from the iconic ‘Last Dance’ season fetched $10.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction, making it the most expensive piece of game-worn sports memorabilia ever sold.
Michael Jordan, renowned for achieving six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, six Finals MVP awards, and five league MVPs, had a unique tradition. Before his first finals victory in 1991, Bulls’ public relations executive Tim Hallam requested one of Jordan’s game-worn Air Jordan sneakers. Jordan fulfilled the request, autographed the shoe, and presented it to Hallam. This tradition continued for a decade, with the shoes not gifted to Hallam being part of the recent auction.
Interestingly, celebrity memorabilia also made headlines this week. At a Christie’s auction, the sole painting created and signed by all four members of The Beatles—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison—sold for $1.744 million. Titled “Images of a Woman,” the psychedelic painting was crafted during the band’s stay at Tokyo’s Hilton Hotel in 1966. The exceptional sale at Christie’s also featured items like Elvis Presley’s Fred Gretsch guitar and Janis Joplin’s gold crocheted vest, with the former selling for $302,400. Additionally, Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler set a new world record at Christie’s in London by auctioning off his collection of 120 guitars and amps for £8.8 million ($11 million), with a portion of the proceeds benefiting various charities.
