Pura Luka Vega Declared Persona Non Grata in Manila City

Manila City council declares Pura Luka Vega persona non grata

PURA LUKA VEGA – The controversial drag queen has been declared “persona non grata” in the city of Manila.

During a Tuesday session, the Manila city council declared Vega, whose real name is Amadeus Fernando Pagente, as someone not welcome in the city, denouncing the drag performer’s portrayal of Jesus in his shows.

All 26 attending councilors, led by Vice Mayor Yul Servo Nieto and Majority Floor Leader Jong Isip, supported the proposal put forth by District 5 Councilor Ricardo Isip Jr. This resolution aims to label Pura Luka Vega as undesirable for performing acts that imitate the Black Nazarene of Quiapo Church, a significant city symbol.

Prior to this, General Santos City’s councils and the local governments of Floridablanca in Pampanga and Toboso in Negros Occidental had passed the same resolutions.

Vega is currently facing a complaint lodged by the Philippines for Jesus Movement in Quezon City for alleged violations of Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code (RPC) and Republic Act 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act. Article 201 penalizes individuals who engage in “indecent or immoral” actions, whether in live performances or on film, that are offensive to any race or religion.

To recall, the drag queen gained widespread attention when a video of him performing a remix version of the Filipino Lord’s Prayer, “Ama Namin,” while dressed as Jesus Christ went viral. This performance drew criticism from the public, including senators who found it offensive, disrespectful, and blasphemous.

As of writing, Pura Luka Vega has yet to issue any statement.
