A couple who work as janitors are proud of their two children who graduated cum laude from Ateneo
RICKY AND ELMA GUTIERREZ – A couple who works as a janitor is filled with joy as both of their children graduated with honors from Ateneo de Manila University.
Ricky and Elma have been working as janitors at the university for 26 and 13 years, respectively, and their dedication resulted in their children, Riel and Rica, receiving scholarships. Rica graduated this year with a degree in management economics, while Riel completed his psychology degree in 2019.
Emma, the children’s mother, expressed her happiness and pride in their achievements, despite their occupation as janitors. She believes that their hard work was all for the sake of their children.
Ricky offered advice to his children, encouraging them to stay grounded and not let pride affect them. Riel, in turn, shared that his goal was not excessive wealth but rather a comfortable life, appreciating the struggles his parents endured while living with limited means.
Riel hopes that his parents will have a long and fulfilling life after dedicating decades of hard work to support their children’s education. Although two of their children have already graduated, Ricky and Elma continue to work diligently to ensure their twin children, who are currently in junior high school, also complete their education.
Rica, speaking in a report by GMA News 24 Oras Weekend, emphasized that she never felt ashamed of her parents’ occupation as janitors. She saw it as a motivation to strive for a better life and to give her parents the comfort they deserve.
