To save his life, a wife donated one of her kidneys to her husband
KIDNEY TRANSPLANT – A devoted wife selflessly donated one of her kidneys to her husband, saving his life as he battled Stage 5 or end-stage Chronic Kidney Disease. Irene Lupais Aidon-Guieb did not hesitate to offer her kidney to her husband, Prince, after learning that she could be a potential donor.
Upon being informed that Prince needed either dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive, the couple underwent tests to determine their compatibility for the transplant. Fortunately, Irene was a suitable match, and the kidney transplant took place successfully. Irene expressed her immense happiness, knowing that she had saved her husband’s life.
Prince, deeply grateful for the blessing he received, acknowledged it as a gift from God. He thanked Irene wholeheartedly and professed his love for her.
The month of June is recognized as National Kidney Month in the Philippines, a commemoration established by former President Fidel Ramos through Proclamation No. 184 in 1993. Ramos himself serves as an example that a person can live a long and healthy life with only one kidney, as he passed away in July 2022 at the age of 94.
The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) reports an increasing number of Filipinos suffering from kidney disease. The percentage of individuals undergoing dialysis has risen from 15 percent to 20 percent. To address this issue and promote kidney care, the NKTI leads efforts to raise awareness during National Kidney Month.
