According to a report by Agence France-Presse, Ashiya Bi, a first-time candidate aged 30, was declared victorious despite her unfortunate death due to an acute lung and abdominal infection. Bi reportedly obtained 44% of the total votes for a position in the municipal civic body in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.
Bi’s husband had informed election officials about her demise, but district official Bhagwan Sharan stated that her name could not be removed from the ballot. “Once the electoral process begins, it cannot be halted or paused,” Sharan said in an interview with AFP on Tuesday, May 16.
