On Sunday, Mark posted an announcement on Facebook where he officially introduced “Meta Verified”.

Mark recently announced plans for a subscription tier, offering account verification with a government ID, a verified blue checkmark for Instagram and Facebook, and “direct access to customer support”.

According to Mark, the said feature is about increasing security and authenticity across its services.

In the comments section of his Facebook post, Mark said that they already provide protections and some support for all users, but verifying government IDs and providing direct access to customer support for millions or billions of users “costs a significant amount of money”. He added that subscription fees will cover the cost and will also pace how many users sign up so they will be able to ensure quality as they scale.

To become “Meta Verified”, Facebook and Instagram users will need to meet minimum activity requirements, to be at least 18 years old and above, and to submit a government ID that matches the name and photo users have on the platforms.

The Verge reported that Facebook and Instagram users who sign up for the service will get exclusive stickers for Reels and Stories, and will also receive 100 free stars per month.

In a blog post, Meta noted that it won’t make any changes to accounts that have been verified using the company’s previous requirements – including authenticity and notability.

The company also noted that businesses can’t yet apply for a “Meta Verified” badge and that users can’t change their profile name, username, birthday, or profile picture without going through the verification process all over again.

Long term, we want to build a subscription offering that’s valuable to everyone, including creators, businesses and our community at large,” Meta said in a blog post. “As part of this vision, we are evolving the meaning of the verified badge so we can expand access to verification and more people can trust the accounts they interact with are authentic.

The said feature is rolling out to New Zealand and Australia this week and will also arrive in more countries “soon”.

According to Meta, users can purchase a monthly subscription for USD 11.99 on the web and USD 14.99 on Android and iOS. The higher cost on mobile is likely a way to offset the commission both Google and Apple take on in-app purchases.
