DTI reminded consumers that the government couldn’t regulate the prices of Noche Buena products even as those are being monitored.

On Tuesday, Trade Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said that the price of Noche Buena products are “not regulated by government” because those are neither basic commodities nor prime commodities.

However, the agency is being informed if retailers and stores overprice those products.

Yung noche buena price guide, that is not regulated by government kasi seasonal products ito. They are neither basic nor prime. So ang presyo ay manufacturers ang nagde-decide,” Castelo said. “Pero naka-monitor kami na kapag may tumaas na presyo compared sa new prices sa prevailing price, doon kami naa-alert agad.

Castelo’s statement came after the Department of Trade and Industry asserted that PHP 500 will be enough for a family to have the Noche Buena despite consumers stating otherwise.

Earlier this month, the Department of Trade and Industry urged manufacturers to minimize the price hike of Noche Buena products. Based on their monitoring, a total of 195 out of 223 Christmas staples saw an increase in prices from 10% to 27%.

Among the Noche Buena products with price adjustments are the following: ham, cheese, mayonnaise, fruit cocktail, pasta, and spaghetti sauce.

It was last month when the DTI issued the price guide for Noche Buena products. At that time, Castelo said that the price guide was is just the current price range of those Noche Buena products in the market and is not the suggested retail price (SRP).
