The congressman was referring to the Consumer Act of 1992 or Republic Act No. 7394.

Amidst the last-minute Christmas shopping in the Philippines, the congressman warned on Wednesday that online retailers who only divulge their prices through private message (PM) to prospective buyers or who do not put price tags on their products are violating the law.

Libaran also stressed that the law compels all retailers to put price tags on products for all consumers to see. He added that this also applies to all retailers, regardless whether they’re selling in physical stores or online.

In order to protect consumers, we would urge the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to rigorously enforce the price tag requirement,” the congressman said.

Under the said law, retailers are not allowed to offer any product for sale to the public without a price tag in pesos and centavos.

The congressman also noted that many online retailers continue to display their products for sale without price tags – including those selling via social media platforms.

Online retailers merely provided photos of their products along with other details and they would then reply with “PM sent” when consumers openly ask for the price of the products.

According to a report, Congressman Libaran said that Congress passed the Republic Act No. 7394 specifically to safeguard the public against potential pricing abuses and to ensure absolute pricing transparency.
