On Tuesday, October 18, during the Senate hearing on the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ (FDCP) 2023 budget, Estrada proposed a ban on Korean dramas, claiming that Filipino artists are losing opportunities as local audiences favor more foreign works.

He claims that if the country continues to air Koreanovelas, many Filipino artists will lose their jobs and income.

He eventually clarified his earlier comments about Korean dramas, saying he said them “out of frustration.”

Estrada’s remark drew mixed reactions online, with some arguing that there are other ways to support the local industry without prohibiting foreign works.

Among those who reacted is former Comelec commissioner Rowena Guanzon.

Guanzon took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter wherein she wrote: “What? ban Korean telserye? Aba marami kayong kaaway dyan, pati ako. The Extraordinary Atty Woo is my fave.”

Guanzon is not the only personality who reacted to the statement of Jinggoy Estrada.

Earlier, Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda said that “targeting foreign shows or acts is not the solution for the lack of support towards local shows and artists.”

“Coming up with better shows and songs, is,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rowena Guanzon served as commissioner of Comelec from 2015 to 2022 under former President Benigno Aquino III and President Rodrigo Duterte.

She also served as Mayor of Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, and as Commission on Audit (COA) commissioner.

She also served as chief of staff to the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, whom she still considers a role model.
