Ong is popular online because of the health and medical tips he shared through his Facebook page (with 16 million followers) and YouTube channel (with 6.5 million subscribers).

In the 2019 elections, he ran for senator under Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) but failed to secure a spot in the Senate.

Last May 9, 2022, he ran for the second-highest position in the government but lost to Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio.

In an interview with Toni Gonzaga, the health expert shared some reasons why he entered the world of politics.

According to him, a “prophetic pastor” approached him, telling him that he should join politics.

“Sabi niya ‘marami kang matutulungan, I can see thousands of people in white they will follow you through the door, pero kailangan kang pumasok sa pinto’,” he said.

“Tapos pupunta daw ako sa probinsya at papalakpakan ng mga tao, tapos si Doc Liza daw ay mapupunta sa Malacañang,” he added.

He admitted that he doesn’t have plans to run in the last election but was convinced by former Manila City Mayor and defeated presidential candidate, Isko Moreno that the latter will shoulder his expenses during the campaign period.

He also thought that he could not handle the world of politics but he did.

For now, Doc Willie Ong continues to hope that a time will come when people will no longer need to watch his videos because they will receive free medical services.

“Kung maganda ang service health care sa private at government at may nakukuha silang libreng gamutan, hindi na sila manonood ng videos ko, e, wala nga silang mapuntahan,” he said.
