On Monday, the city government announced that its voluntary face mask policy will be on “trial period” until the yearend and will be automatically lifted should there be a surge in coronavirus infections in the city.

In reading the Executive Order No. 6, Karla Henry-Ammann, the spokesperson of Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, said the “trial period” of the Executive Order No. 5 was set from September 1 to December 31, 2022.

The same period is hereby referred to as the trial and observation period,” Ammann said.

Ammann added that the EO 6 will be automatically lifted and the wearing of face masks in Cebu City will be mandatory anew if there will be a surge of coronavirus cases in the city, as verified by the national government.

Mayor Rama signed the said EO during the city government’s flag ceremony on Monday.

To recall, DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said that they were not consulted regarding the lifting of the mandatory face mask policy in Cebu City. She also stressed that there will be a higher risk of coronavirus infections in an area if the safeguards against the coronavirus disease are not in place.

On the part of the Palace, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said that they respected the mandate of the local government units (LGUs) over their own jurisdictions.
