In a statement, Lakas-CMD said that the party welcomed this development as an opportunity to renew the partnership with PDP-Laban, which had been a steady ally in pushing for social and economic reforms under the Duterte administration.

Lakas-CMD was currently headed by House Majority Leader and Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez as president and Mayor Sara as chairperson.

The party also said that Mayor Sara had been espousing unity and cohesion for a better Philippines under the “BBM-Sara UniTeam” alliance that included Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) of presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., to which Lakas-CMD had been very supportive.

Lakas-CMD’s statement was released a few hours after the Cusi-led PDP-Laban party distributed copies of its letter of endorsement for Mayor Sara.

PDP-Laban is divided between the Cusi and Pimentel factions but didn’t have official party candidates they may call their own.

The PDP-Laban faction headed by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi had originally named Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go and President Rodrigo Duterte as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2022 elections. Both aspirants have begged off later.

On the other hand, the faction headed by Senator Manny Pacquiao and Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III also failed to field their standard bearer.
