On Saturday, Mayor Sara briefly talked with Villar in a chance meeting at the Coffee Project in the Evia Lifestyle Center in Las Piñas and also assured him of her support in the 2022 elections.

Mayor Sara led the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), which was a force to reckon with in Mindanao, and was largely favored in recent surveys to succeed her father, President Rodrigo Duterte.

However, Mayor Sara had repeatedly announced that she wasn’t interested in running for president and would focus on winning another term as Davao City mayor instead.

Villar was seeking a Senate seat in the May 2022 elections under the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), which was headed by President Duterte.

Joining him in the PDP-Laban senatorial lineup were John Castriciones, Greco Belgica, Gregorio Honasan, Robin Padilla, House Deputy Speaker and Sagip Partylist Representative Rodante Marcoleta, Rey Langit, and Salvador Panelo.

Leading the administration party were standard-bearer Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa and running mate Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go.

Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, president of a faction of the PDP-Laban party, admitted that Dela Rosa indeed met with Mayor Sara earlier this week to “offer” that he can be replaced in case she tried to run for the highest position. However, Cusi said that Dela Rosa’s offer was “not the party position”.
