The DPWH-Cavite 3rd Engineering Office was given a permit by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office to cut down 68 trees which might affect the construction along Silang Bypass Road.

Prior to the issuance of a permit, an online signature campaign was launched to oppose the cutting down of trees.

“With the urgent calls for action to combat climate change, why is our government not heeding the call? And why do they always focus on giving priority to the minority of Filipinos who owns a car?” the petition noted via Change.org.

According to Silang Mayor Corie Poblete, the cutting down of trees started last week.

The mayor herself was against the cutting down of trees but cited that large roots and branches might result in road accidents.

“Ako rin po ay nalulungkot dahil unti-unting nababawasan ang mga puno sa ating kapaligiran na sumisimbulo ng pagiging ‘Garden Capital of the South’ ng ating bayan,” she said.

On the other hand, PENRO clarified that there is an existing memorandum order which requires the permittee to replace 100 seedlings in every tree being cut.

The Philippine government is implementing road clearing and road widening operations all across the country over the past few years. The program aims to remove all the road obstacles causing traffic congestion.

Road-widening projects are being implemented through Republic Act 197, or an act to provide for an effective highway administration, modify apportionment of highway funds and give aid to the provinces, chartered cities and municipalities in the construction of roads and streets, and for other purposes.
