Chooks-to-Go to give Olympic medalist Leopoldo Serantes P100K per month for life
LEOPOLDO SERANTES – The bronze medalist in the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea will receive P100,000 per month for life courtesy of Chooks-to-Go.
The former Olympian who is now 59-year-old, a native of Bicol, is currently suffering from the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and has been confined in Veterans Memorial Medical Center.
Chooks-to-Go president Ronald Mascariñas said that they decided to give him a monthly allowance amounting to P100,000 “so that he can live with dignity befitting a living hero”.
Leopoldo Serantes is the sixth (6th) Filipino to win an Olympic medal. He was also a gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games.
He is considered by the 1996 Atlanta Games silver medalist Onyok Velasco as one of his childhood heroes.
Velasco was the one who helped the Chooks-to-Go president to trace Serantes’ whereabouts.
Leodelia, the daughter of Leopoldo Serantes said that her father has been suffering from COPD for months.
COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems.
According to her, her family had been struggling financially especially with her dad’s medical expenses.
Leodelia and Velasco are grateful for the financial support promised by Chooks-to-Go to Leopoldo.
Based on the report of Manila Bulletin, it will all go to his medical bills and expenses.
“Sobrang laking tulong po nito para sa tatay ko. Hindi na siya mamomoblema sa araw-araw niya na gastusin para sa oxygen, sa gastusan niya sa gamutan na pang buhay,” Leodelia said.
Meanwhile, it was just recently when weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz made history as the first Filipina to win a gold medal in the Olympics.
Her victory was accompanied by massive rewards and incentives which paved the way for other athletes such as Onyok Velasco to be given recognition anew.
