Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz was reportedly recognized as the most searched athlete on Facebook following her historic win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Fans all over the world have rallied behind Diaz on social media, specifically on Instagram and Facebook, by giving her an outpouring of support and recognition after her historic achievement.
ABS-CBN News reported that Diaz became the most talked-about athlete on Facebook, overtaking American gymnast Simone Biles and Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal in the list of “Most Mentioned Athletes on Facebook (Globally)”.
Diaz also trended on Instagram as she became the third most-mentioned athlete on the photo-sharing app across the globe over the past 24 hours.
Facebook noted that the Philippines became the country that talked most about the Olympics on the platform over the same period, besting the United States and India.
“The Philippine flag emoji also landed a podium finish, ranking as the third most-used emoji on the app during the same period,” Facebook said.
It was last Monday when Diaz made history as she ruled the women’s weightlifting 55kg event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. As such, Diaz made the headlines not just in the Philippines but all over the world.
Diaz, who was also Airwoman of the Philippine Air Force, finally put an end to nearly a century-long Olympic gold medal drought since the Philippines first competed in the Olympics in 1924.
