Chito Gascon, chairman of CHR, dies
CHITO GASCON – The chairman of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) passed away, earlier today, October 9.
It was confirmed by his brother Miguel who took to the social networking site, Facebook to share the sad news.
“Sa dami mong laban, sa COVID pa tayo na talo! Love you Kuya!” said Miguel.
Jacqueline De Guia, the spokesperson of CHR also confirmed the passing of Gascon who was succumbed to COVID-19.
It was in 2015 when Chito Gascon was appointed as chairman of the CHR during the term of late President Benigno Aquino III. His term will end in May 2022.
José Luis Martín C. Gascón also known as Chito Gascon was a Filipino lawyer, civil organizer, and human-rights activist.
He served as a member of the Human Rights Victims Claims Board, where he held a rank equivalent to Justice of the Court of Appeals.
Chito Gascon was the youngest member of both the 1987 Constitutional Commission and the 8th Philippine Congress where he helped pass landmark legislation with the creation of the Sanggunian Kabataan.
On the other hand, the Commission on Human Rights is an independent constitutional office that was first created under the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines. Its primary function is to investigate all forms of human rights violations involving civil and political rights in the country.
The commission was founded and first led by Chairman Jose W. Diokno, the father of human rights in the Philippines. It is composed of four members and a Chairperson who holds seven years term without reappointment.
