It was last September 8 when President Duterte has formally accepted his nomination for vice president in the 2022 elections by the Cusi-led PDP-Laban.

His withdrawal from Cusi-led PDP-Laban’s nomination wasn’t made public until Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go filed a certificate of candidacy (COC) for the vice presidency.

In his short talk after Senator Go filed his certificate of candidacy (COC), the President said that the “overwhelming sentiment” of the Filipino people pushed him to retire from politics.

According to him, the “overwhelming sentiment” of the Filipinos was that he wasn’t qualified for vice president and it would be “a violation of the Constitution, to circumvent the law, the spirit of the Constitution”.

In obedience to the will of the people who after all placed me in the presidency many years ago I now say sa mga kababayan ko sundin ko ang gusto ninyo and today I announce my retirement from politics,” Duterte said without giving further details on the matter.

President Duterte’s announcement came after Senator Bong Go filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for vice president in the 2022 elections.

ABS-CBN News reported that a recent survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed 60% of 1,200 respondents believed that President Duterte’s move violated the intention of the Constitution, which has a 1-term limit in order to prevent abuse of power.

A separate survey by Pulse Asia showed that Senate President Vicente Sotto III overtaking President Duterte as the most preferred prospect for vice president in the 2022 elections.
