A nurse in New York became the first person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech in the United States.

This, after the Food and Drug Administration in the United States (US FDA) authorized the use of COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech for emergency use.

Sandra Lindsay, a critical care nurse who worked at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York, received the COVID-19 vaccine live on television shortly before 9:30 am (10:30 p.m. PH time).

US President Donald Trump then posted a tweet saying “First Vaccine Administered. Congratulations USA! Congratulations WORLD!”.

According to Lindsay, the jab didn’t feel any different from taking other vaccines. She also shared that she felt great and felt relieved.

I hope this marks the beginning of the end of the very painful time in our history. I want to instill public confidence that the vaccine is safe. We’re in a pandemic so we all need to do our part,” Lindsay said.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo then told Lindsay that he hoped the COVID-19 vaccine will give her and other frontline health care workers “a sense of security and safety.”

According to Cuomo, it’s going to take months before the COVID-19 vaccine hits critical mass.

So, this is the light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s a long tunnel,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo also reminded the people in New York to keep following social distancing guidelines.

COVID-19 had ravaged the United States as over 299,000 Americans died due to coronavirus disease — including more than 35,000 residents of New York state.
