‘2 Valid IDs’ Film Sparks Viral Wave of Filipinos Sharing ID Woes

Netizens Pour Out Frustrations Over Valid ID Requirements After Watching ‘2 Valid IDs’

2 VALID IDS – A small indie film about a farmer who cannot present two valid IDs has turned into one of the most talked-about topics online this week, as Filipinos flooded social media on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with their own stories of being turned away over identification requirements.

The film, “2 Valid IDs,” stars Marietta Subong, better known as Pokwang, as Sylvia, a poor farmer trying to get financial help for her hospitalized husband. Her problem: she does not have a single ID that offices will accept.

Viewers who caught the movie in cinemas said it hit close to home. “Nakakagalit at nakakalungkot isipin na ganito ang realidad ng sistema natin sa Pilipinas,” one Threads user wrote, asking why people who already need help are made to suffer more.

Another user joked bitterly that in the Philippines, “in order for you to get 1 (one) valid ID, you have to own 2 (two) valid IDs.” Others recalled having their government-issued IDs rejected, with one saying a passport was still not enough for a building guard.

Actor Richard Juan also chimed in, comparing the setup to Hong Kong, where he grew up. “Grew up in HK where one ID does everything,” he wrote, noting that in the Philippines not all government IDs are considered valid.

Sociologist Randy David added fuel to the discussion after writing a column about the film. “Worse than being poor is being treated as if one did not exist,” he wrote, calling the film one of the truest depictions of poverty he has seen.

Pokwang thanked David and his daughter, broadcast journalist Kara David, after Kara shared the column online. “Grabe, salamat po,” the actress replied.

Advocates have pointed out that under the PhilSys Act, the National ID is meant to be enough proof of identity for both government and private transactions.

The Cinemalaya 2026 entry won Best Actress for Pokwang, the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Choice Award. It has been showing in cinemas nationwide since October 14.
