“ABS-CBN, puno na ang salop, dapat ka nang kalusin.”
Those were the words of House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta at the end of his summation or summary of arguments on ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal last Thursday, July 9.
In his presentation, Marcoleta used a clip from “Kapag Puno Na Ang Salop,” the 1987 blockbuster movie of Fernando Poe Jr. or popularly known as FPJ.
In the movie, FPJ said the iconic line: “Puno na ang salop, malapit na kitang kalusin.”
“Let me end with the popular movie clip from an onscreen and offscreen hero that had captured the hearts of millions of Filipinos,” Marcoleta said.
“To sum up the comprehensive, impartial, and open proceedings implored by the Speaker of the House, Alan Peter Cayetano, in regard to the franchise application of ABS-CBN,” he added.
“Ang sabi nga po ni FPJ, Mr. Chair, kung uulitin ko lang ABS-CBN, puno na ang salop dapat ka nang kalusin,” he stressed.
Marcoleta, the Sagip Party-list Representative, has been critical on ABS-CBN in the past 12 hearings for the network’s bid for the renewal of its franchise.

He claimed that the network has committed violations such as citizenship of network owner Gabby Lopez III, labor practices, alleged improper tax payments, use of Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs), and about digital operations of the network using AMCARA Broadcasting Network franchise even though it is illegal.
The house is set to release its ruling on the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN whether to approve or reject it.
