Here’s why Darryl Yap declined the invitation of FAMAS
DARRYL YAP – The director known for his controversial films “Maid in Malacañang” and “Martyr or Murderer,” has declined an invitation from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) to participate in their annual awards night. Yap posted a screenshot of the invitation on his Facebook account along with his response to FAMAS.
While Yap expressed his honor in being considered for the invitation, he declined to participate in an event where his films would be presented and adjudicated alongside works that he personally does not believe deserve recognition. He specifically mentioned the film “Katips” as an example of a cinematic work he does not believe deserves recognition.
Yap explained that his decision was based on his personal principles and values, which he cannot compromise. He values his personal convictions and integrity more than anything else and cannot participate in any undertaking that would require him to change who he is. Yap wished FAMAS all the best for their upcoming event and hopes they can work together on future projects that align with his personal beliefs and values.
In his Facebook post, Yap explained why he shared the FAMAS invitation publicly. He wanted to inform his followers, colleagues in the industry, and fellow artists that he takes responsibility for why their films are not recognized in some awards ceremonies. He emphasized that his statement was not meant to boast or undermine anyone’s credibility, but rather a personal statement to answer the questions and thoughts of his supporters.
His post went viral, garnering mixed reactions from the netizens. Here are some of the comments:
