New York parking garage collapses
NEW YORK – A parking garage in lower Manhattan’s Financial District collapsed, resulting in the death of one worker, injuries to five others, and several cars being crushed by falling concrete floors that resembled a stack of pancakes.
Officials stated that they had no reason to suspect that the incident was anything other than a structural collapse. Witnesses reported feeling a powerful rumbling before the collapse, and bystander video footage showed cars dangling precariously from the buckled upper deck of the three-story building. Firefighters had to conduct searches with a drone and a robotic dog due to the building’s instability after the collapse.
The incident occurred at around 4 pm, a few blocks away from City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge, and half a mile away from the New York Stock Exchange. According to the acting buildings commissioner, Kazimir Vilenchik, the building had collapsed completely to the cellar floor.
William Flashnick, a student at Pace University, was in a classroom with a friend when they heard what they thought was an explosion. They ran to the window and saw a cloud of thick dust rising in the air. When it cleared, they looked down at the parking lot, where cars lay scattered around and the top parking deck had cracked open. Flashnick stated that his initial reaction was to recall the World Trade Center, which loomed over the neighborhood before the 9/11 attacks.
The collapse of the parking garage is a tragic incident that caused loss of life and injury to several people. The authorities were quick to respond, but the unstable condition of the building meant that they had to resort to alternative methods to conduct their search and rescue operation.
