SIM REGISTRATION – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said that it is aiming to register at least 1 million SIMs per day.

In a press briefing held last January 10, Information and Communications Technology Undersecretary Anna Mae Lamentillo disclosed that the DICT is aiming to hit at least 1 million SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) registration per day.

Lamentillo said on Tuesday that the government is currently “on track” of hitting 1 million SIM registrants per day. However, she clarified that there could be a “lull” in the SIM registration in the coming days and then a surge once the deadline nears.

Citing data from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the DICT reported that the SIM registration has breached 16 million as of January 9, 2023. This, however, is only 9.56% of the nearly 170 million subscribers in the country.

The DICT also said that they’re also not ruling out the possibility of an extension of the SIM registration period.

We are always willing to extend our implementation period, [but] we are [going to do] our best first,” Lamentillo said. “The update is a little bit low because problems occurred during the first few days of the implementation.

Lamentillo also said that the DICT and other government agencies bared its plan to establish registration sites in order to further help Filipinos register their SIMs, especially those living in remote areas with weak internet connection. However, Lamentillo didn’t disclose when those strategically-placed facilities will be established.

Under the Implementing Rules and Regulation (IRR) of the Republic Act 11934 or the “SIM Registration Act”, the department has “60 days, upon the release of the IRR, to compel the telcos” to establish or roll out those sites.
