Canada Paddleboarding Accident Claims the Lives of Filipino Newlyweds
A newlywed Filipino couple living in Canada tragically passed away after a paddleboarding accident on May 30, 2026, at Browning Lake in Murrin Provincial Park near Squamish, British Columbia. The couple, identified as Genesis Jeru Bague and his wife Mariz Bello, fell into the water and drowned during what was supposed to be a birthday gathering with friends.
According to reports from the family and Canadian media, the couple joined friends for a celebration at the park. They were seen paddleboarding around 3:00 in the afternoon, and a video even showed them on the water before the accident occurred. Later, witnesses noticed that the couple was struggling to stay balanced on the board.
The situation worsened when the paddleboard overturned, causing both to fall into the water. Their companions saw them struggling and quickly called for help, with some even attempting to rescue them by jumping into the lake. Unfortunately, the couple disappeared underwater and could not be saved at the scene. Their bodies were not immediately recovered.

After several days of search operations, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed on June 2, 2026, that the bodies had been recovered by their underwater recovery team during a coordinated search effort.
The couple had built their life together in Canada. Genesis Jeru moved there in 2019, followed by Mariz. They got married in 2023 and became permanent residents in 2025. They also recently visited the Philippines in 2025 to spend time with their families.

Both families are now grieving deeply over the loss. Relatives described Mariz as a caring daughter who always prioritized her family, while Genesis was known as a hardworking and supportive son who regularly sent financial support, especially for his father’s medical needs. Family members also shared that Mariz’s mother is in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease, making the loss even more painful.
