Netizens Criticize Karen Davila for Overlooking the Contributions of SB19
KAREN DAVILA – Netizens have criticized the TV Patrol anchor for seemingly overlooking the contributions of the P-pop boy group SB19 to the international music scene.
This controversy arose following Davila’s comments about the girl group BINI during a TV Patrol broadcast on July 23, 2024. After a report on BINI’s upcoming performance at the KCON event in Los Angeles, Davila remarked that it was great that BINI was opening doors for P-pop and that their success could pave the way for other Filipino artists.
These comments sparked backlash on social media, particularly on Facebook, where fans of SB19 felt that Davila had disregarded the group’s significant achievements in promoting P-pop internationally. One netizen highlighted SB19’s numerous accolades, including recognition from Billboard, Nickelodeon, Asian Artist Awards, and the Grammy Awards, as well as their international TV guestings, sold-out concerts, and collaborations with global artists. This user emphasized that SB19 had already opened the doors for P-pop years ago and criticized Davila for seemingly ignoring their efforts and successes.
Another netizen echoed this sentiment, questioning why news anchors like Davila failed to acknowledge SB19’s pioneering role in the P-pop industry. They pointed out that despite not having a major network to back them, SB19 had achieved considerable international fame through their talent, perseverance, and the support of their fanbase, A’TIN. This netizen urged Davila to stop conditioning viewers and to recognize SB19’s impact on P-pop.
Some netizens provided evidence to support their claims, citing statements from prominent figures like ABS-CBN Star Magic head Laurenti Dyogi, Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez, and singer Jed Madela, who had all acknowledged SB19 as the leading P-pop group in the Philippines and credited them with popularizing Filipino music globally.
However, a few netizens defended Davila, suggesting that her comments were not intended to dismiss SB19’s contributions. They proposed that her remarks might have been biased due to BINI being a talent of ABS-CBN but did not believe there was any malicious intent behind her statements. They pointed out that different acts have contributed to P-pop’s global recognition, including solo artist Sarah Geronimo, boy group SB19, and girl group BINI.
SB19, formed in 2016 and launched in 2018, consists of members Stell, Pablo, Justin, Josh, and Ken. While BINI, launched in 2021, includes members Aiah, Sheena, Maloi, Mikha, Stacey, Jhoanna, Gwen, and Colet.
