For a Meal Under P300, a Stolen iPhone Worth P40K Was Used as Payment
UNUSUAL PAYMENT – Bedardi Raja, an Indian citizen visiting Goa, had his iPhone worth P40K stolen, which was later used as payment for a meal worth less than P300.
Smartphones are popular targets for thieves not only in the Philippines but also in various parts of the world. Recently, a Twitter user named Bedardi Raja, with the username @KartikeyaRai11, fell victim to theft. Bedardi, an Indian citizen living in New Delhi, was on a trip to Goa for a vacation on March 13, 2024.
Goa, situated in the southwest of India, is famous for its beautiful beaches, culture, climate, and historic landmarks—a perfect mix of Portuguese landscapes and Indian culture. However, Bedardi’s Goa experience turned unpleasant as he became a victim of pickpocketing.
His iPhone, valued at around P40,000, was stolen by a drunken pickpocket who later tried to use it to pay for a meal. The thief, lacking money for his meal, offered the stolen iPhone in exchange for the dish known as Pav Bhaji, a popular Indian dish made from thick vegetable curry served with soft bread rolls.
The restaurant owner accepted the iPhone as payment and plugged it in for charging. When the phone rang, the restaurant owner answered and found it was Bedardi calling. Despite nearly 36 hours passing since the iPhone went missing, Bedardi was thrilled to locate it. However, he had to travel 60 kilometers to retrieve it from the restaurant owner.
The incident amused internet users, with many joking about the thief’s desperation to trade an iPhone for a single meal. However, it serves as a reminder not to take an interest in other people’s belongings. On the other hand, the restaurant owner’s decision to return the stolen iPhone to Bedardi was admirable and heartening.
