DENR’s Attention Called Over Resort in the Middle of Chocolate Hills

Netizens Call Attention to DENR Over Resort in Chocolate Hills

DENR – The attention of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources was called over a resort built in the middle of Chocolate Hills in Bohol.

DENR is a government agency in the Philippines responsible for the conservation, management, and sustainable development of the country’s environment and natural resources. The DENR oversees various environmental protection and conservation programs, including the management of protected areas, enforcement of environmental laws, and promotion of sustainable resource use.

The ‘Chocolate Hills’ became a trending topic on the social media platform X due to the construction of a resort in the area, which is believed to spoil the scenic view of the famous tourist spot in the Philippines. The resort, prominently visible from a top view, has drawn criticism from netizens, who question its legality and impact on the protected landscape.

This prompted netizens to call the attention of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local government of Bohol to inquire about the permit given to the resort and its operation.

Many expressed frustration and disbelief, considering the Chocolate Hills’ status as a National Geological Monument and a proposed UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite concerns raised by netizens and local officials, there has been no response from the DENR or the resort owner.

Meanwhile, the Chocolate Hills are a geological formation located in the Bohol province of the Philippines. They are composed of at least 1,260 hills, though estimates suggest there may be as many as 1,776 hills spread across an area of over 50 square kilometers (20 square miles). The hills are named for their resemblance to chocolate kisses, particularly during the dry season when the grass covering them turns brown.

These hills are conical karst formations made of grass-covered limestone. They are famous tourist attraction in Bohol and are featured in the provincial flag and seal. They have been declared the country’s third National Geological Monument and are proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
