SK Chairman Candidate Dies After Suffering Cardiac Arrest While Playing Basketball

While playing basketball, an SK chairman candidate dies following a cardiac arrest

DAVAO CITY – A 23-year-old candidate running for the position of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairman tragically experienced a cardiac arrest and passed away while participating in a basketball game.

In the CCTV footage, Philip Saladio Jr., a resident of Barangay Tawan-Tawan, can be seen actively engaged in a basketball game when he suddenly collapsed, appearing to have lost consciousness. The basketball game came to an abrupt halt as Saladio’s condition deteriorated rapidly. He was promptly rushed to the hospital, but tragically, he did not survive, succumbing to a cardiac arrest.

The shocking turn of events took Saladio’s parents by complete surprise. They had no prior knowledge of any underlying health issues that their son may have had. His mother, Melanie, shared her thoughts, saying,
“Hindi nga ako agad lumapit kasi akala ko natisod lang siguro.”

Saladio’s father revealed that his son was not only a passionate basketball player but also dedicated his time to teaching young children how to play the sport. Additionally, he was an aspiring candidate for the position of SK chairman in Barangay Tawan-Tawan, demonstrating his commitment to serving his community.

Cardiac arrest is a sudden and critical medical event where the heart either stops beating or beats irregularly. This condition disrupts blood flow to vital organs, potentially leading to loss of consciousness and death if not treated promptly. It differs from a heart attack, which involves a blocked coronary artery but doesn’t stop the heart’s beating.

Cardiac arrest can be triggered by irregular heart rhythms like ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT) or can result in asystole, a complete absence of heart activity. Immediate actions like CPR and defibrillation with an AED are crucial for survival, as cardiac arrest can strike people of all ages unexpectedly.
