The city of San Carlos, situated in Negros Occidental, holds the annual Pintaflores Festival in November. This renowned celebration, with a name derived from the Spanish words for “tattoos” and “flowers,” merges the themes of emotions and nature, creating a captivating spectacle.
The festival’s narrative centers around the journey of Princess Nabingka, who bravely ventured to unexplored lands, ultimately founding what is now known as San Carlos City. Each November, following the tradition of honoring departed souls, the people of San Carlos City partake in the festival, transforming the streets into a vibrant carnival.
Pintaflores, an amalgamation of floral elegance and the artistry of tattoos remains a lesser-known yet visually captivating event on Negros Island. The locals envisioned a remarkable celebration that would enchant both the community and international visitors, with the festival’s highlights being the ritual competition and the lively street dancing.
Dancers adorned in colorful costumes and ornate body paintings, guided by skilled choreographers and accompanied by lively music, infuse the event with a contagious energy. The performances portray various themes such as gratitude, abundance, life, death, and the age-old battle between good and evil. Adhering to the Pintados tradition, the dancers’ bodies are adorned with floral designs as a symbol of reverence for both the people and the environment.
The festival’s dances convey poignant tales of life and death, extolling the triumph of virtue over wickedness, all in honor of the city’s patron saint, San Carlos Borromeo. Adding an extra touch of glamour to the festivities, the Search for Miss San Carlos City pageant showcases the beauty of Negrense women and the creativity of local designers through their dazzling ensembles.
