Former Resto Cleaner from Cavite Now a Successful Restaurateur in Norway

Meet the Sushi Master of Norway, Roger Asakil Joya

ROGER ASAKIL JOYA – A former cleaner in a sushi restaurant, originally from Cavite, is now renowned as the ‘Sushi Master’ of Norway, overseeing three ‘Michelin Star’ restaurants in the country.

He is the founder of Norway’s largest sushi chain, comprising 45 food establishments, with an annual net worth of 300 million Kroner or 1.5 billion pesos. Upon his arrival in Norway, he began his career as a restaurant cleaner, a role that kindled his dream of becoming a sushi chef.

He recalls arriving in Norway at the tender age of 17. Following his arrival, he immersed himself in learning the local language and adapting to life in the country. When the opportunity arose to work in a sushi restaurant, he recognized it as an auspicious moment to launch his journey as a sushi chef. Today, he doesn’t own just one restaurant; he possesses five of his own, three of which have earned Michelin stars, in addition to overseeing 45 restaurant chains.

One of those he mentored, who has since established his own restaurant, is Chef Juan. “Isa siya sa naging mentor ko as a chef at pagkatapos naman nun pinagkatiwalaan niya ako. Kaya ngayon meron na ko dalawang branch from Tonsberg and Sandefjord. I have my own restaurants because of chef Roger,” explained Chef Juan Wong III, a franchisee.

When Chef Roger was asked for advice to those who aspire to own a restaurant and enhance their lives, he said: “My advice to those who have a dream, learn economics about restaurant management because it’s not as easy as you think.”

Meanwhile, according to ABS-CBN News, Roger is not only focused on his business but also on guiding fellow Filipinos who want to start their own businesses.
