Tim Cone Set to Coach Gilas Pilipinas in Asian Games

Gilas Pilipinas coach in the Asian Games is Tim Cone

TIM CONE – The most successful head coach in the history of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), is set to lead Gilas Pilipinas at the 19th Asian Games.

Cone is an American basketball coach renowned for his successful coaching career in the PBA. He holds the record for the most PBA titles with 25, including two Grand Slams. Cone has also received four Coach of the Year awards and has won more than 1,000 games in the league.

It was in 1989 when his coaching career started after taking over as coach of the Alaska Air Force, where he achieved significant success, including a Grand Slam in 1996. He faced challenges, such as being barred from coaching in 1991 due to employment permit issues, but returned and continued to lead Alaska to victories. Cone later coached Purefoods and guided the team to championships, including another Grand Slam in 2014. He also achieved success with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, ending an eight-year championship drought for the team.

Meanwhile, Tim Cone is set to lead Gilas Pilipinas at the 19th Asian Games. Assisting him will be Richard del Rosario, his deputy from Barangay Ginebra, and Alfrancis Chua, the sports director of the San Miguel Corporation and a PBA Board governor for the Gin Kings.

The decision to appoint Tim Cone and his coaching team came from Ramon S. Ang, San Miguel’s president and CEO. The Asian Games will commence on September 23 in Hangzhou, China, with the basketball competition starting three days later. Gilas Pilipinas, which finished fifth in the previous edition held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2018 under Yeng Guiao’s leadership, will open its campaign against Brunei.

The complete roster for Gilas will be revealed during a press conference at the PBA’s office in Libis, Quezon City, later today. It remains to be seen whether Tim Cone’s role is temporary, similar to his position as a transitional head coach during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, where the team performed exceptionally well.
