Airline crew members pose for a picture on the airplane’s wing
WING CLIMB – Several crew members of the Swiss International Air Lines Boeing 777 faced heavy criticism due to their “unprofessional” picture-taking.
Recently, a video went viral on social media showing three cabin crew members posing for a picture on the airplane’s wing. This occurred just moments before the airplane departed from Buenos Aires, Argentina airport, en route to Zurich, Switzerland. The video was captured by a passenger waiting in the terminal.
In the initial part of the clip, a female flight attendant can be observed striking various poses while standing on the airplane’s wing. The face of the person taking the photo is not visible, but the emergency exit of the plane is open.
Subsequently, a male flight attendant emerged from the emergency exit and participated in a photo opportunity with the others. Another male crew member, who appeared to be a cabin chief, posed alone, reminiscent of a bodybuilder. Meanwhile, during this time, three more men from the ground crew were taking pictures next to the jet engine.
The video drew the attention of high-ranking officials from Swiss International Air Lines, prompting the company to promptly issue a statement. “What looks like fun in the video is life-threatening,” remarked Swiss International Airlines Spokesman Michael Pelzer in a New York Post report. He added, “The wings of the Boeing 777 are about five meters [16.4 feet] high. A fall from that height onto the hard surface can be devastating.” The official stressed that the crew should only step onto the airplane’s wings during emergencies, such as evacuations.
The airline’s Vice President, Martin Knuchel, stated that he is “angry and disappointed.” He asserted that undesirable behavior from the staff will not be tolerated.
A cabin chief remarked that the actions of the airline crew members were embarrassing. “If that had happened to me on the ground in Zurich, I would have sent these people straight home.” An unidentified colleague also criticized the wing climb for a photo, stating that their actions were “extremely dangerous” and “simply unprofessional.”
