One of the benefits of being a member of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is that when you die, your family or loved ones will not be left without any financial assistance for your burial. While death remains a quite uncomfortable topic for many people, knowing that your family will have something to turn to can be a big relief.

Undeniably, death is both an emotionally and financially challenging situation for the family members of a person who passed away. Meanwhile, in the case of GSIS members, their families has a benefit offer that they can turn to for financial assistance – the GSIS Funeral Benefit.

For the family of a deceased GSIS member to qualify for the claim application, the GSIS member must meet any of the following eligibility in the criteria:

  • an active member of GSIS
  • an old age pensioner
  • a member who has been separated from the service but who is entitled to future separation or retirement benefit
  • a member who retired under RA 1616 prior to the effectivity of RA 8291 with at least 20 years of service, regardless of age
  • a retiree who at the time of his retirement was of pensionable age under RA 8291 but who opted to retire under RA 1616

The granting of the Funeral Benefit by the GSIS will be based on the following order set by the state-run social insurance agency:

  • Legal Spouse
  • Legal Child who spent for the funeral services
  • Any person who can present unquestionable evidence of spending for the funeral expenses of the deceased GSIS member

There are different GSIS Unemployment Benefit requirements and GSIS Disability Benefit requirements compared with the documents needed in claiming a Funeral Benefit.

The GSIS Funeral Benefit requirements depend on who will process or get the claim. If the filer is the legal spouse, here are the documents needed:

  • Original copy of Death Certificate of the member from the National Statistics Office (NSO)
  • Original copy of Marriage Contract from NSO
  • Original copy of NSO-certified Birth Certificate of the claimant
  • Two valid IDs (original to be shown, photocopy to be submitted)

If the filer or claimant is other than the legal spouse of the deceased GSIS member, here are the GSIS Funeral Benefit requirements:

  • Original copy of Death Certificate of the member from NSO
  • GSIS Affidavit of Funeral Expense Form
  • Original & Xerox copy of Official Receipt under the claimant’s name or if a Funeral Plan was used, a Certification from the memorial service provider that the plan was availed of
  • Two valid IDs (original to be shown, photocopy to be submitted)
  • Birth certificate of the claimant or valid ID (issued by the government) indicating his/her date of birth

Submit the requirements to a branch of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) to process the claim.
