In Sagay City, Negros Occidental, a bottlenose dolphin was found dead

DEAD DOLPHIN – A deceased bottlenose dolphin was discovered in the northern area of Carbin Reef at the Sagay Marine Reserve on the morning of July 3.

A fisherman came across the dolphin around 5:40 a.m. and reported what he found to Jose Roberto Togle, the Head of the Resource Management Section of Sagay City Environment and Natural Resources (SCENRO).

SCENRO is currently investigating the cause of the dolphin’s death. Initial observations suggest that the mammal may have been struck by a hard object on its blowhole. The dolphin is identified as an adult male, measuring approximately 1.92 meters in length and weighing around 90 kilograms. Upon examination, scratch marks were noticed on its left eye and nape, along with soft tissue at the back of its head.

The Bantay Dagat Volunteers and SCENRO took custody of the dolphin. In response to this incident, Togle advised fishermen to promptly release any marine mammals that may become trapped in their fishing nets. He emphasized that these animals play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem.

Meanwhile, the bottlenose dolphin is a fascinating marine mammal known for its intelligence and playful nature. It is a species of dolphin found in oceans and seas worldwide, and its name is derived from its distinctive snout that resembles a bottle.
