Perfectly Round Egg Found at an Australian Supermarket, Can Be Sold for Over PHP51K

Perfectly round egg discovered in Australia

AUSTRALIA – A perfectly round chicken egg was discovered at a supermarket in Melbourne and is considered an extremely rare occurrence with odds estimated at “one in a billion.”

The news of this unusual find was shared on Instagram by Jacqui Felgate, the host of 3AW Football, after one of her followers sent her footage of the round egg found in a Woolworths supermarket. The follower mentioned that after researching, they realized how incredibly rare it was, with the last round egg found selling for over AUD$1400 or PHP51,159.20.

The discovery suggests that there is a demand for uniquely-shaped eggs, although the reason for this is unclear. Collectors from other countries are willing to pay a high price to acquire such eggs. For those curious about what can be done with a round egg, it is possible to preserve the shell after removing its contents. Museums commonly employ this preservation technique for wild bird eggs.

While larger eggs require a small hole to be made for preservation purposes, smaller eggs naturally dry out in a dry environment. The Elephant Bird, an extinct species, produced one of the most expensive eggs ever sold. In 2013, an intact Elephant Bird egg was auctioned at Christie’s for £66,675 or over 4 million pesos.

The estimated age of the Elephant Bird egg was around 800 years old, and it was 200 times larger than a chicken egg. The Elephant Bird, native to Madagascar, stood at 10 feet tall and weighed 440 kilograms. Due to extensive hunting for food, the species became extinct. In contrast, dinosaur eggs in good condition typically fetch a price of £1,600 or PHP111,916.28.
