Grade 2 Student Dies After Choking on Candy

Grade 2 student chokes to death on a candy

CHOKING – A grade 2 student from Cadiz East Elementary School passed away after he choke on a candy.

The incident happened during recess when the male child suddenly stood up and drank water. However, shortly afterwards, he clasped his throat and was immediately taken to the Emergency Clinic, where he was seen struggling to breathe.

It was initially suspected that the siomai given by his classmate may have caused the blockage in the child’s throat, but the food was found only on the table and untouched. Upon examination of the child’s bag, crumbs of a “Chubby” candy were found, indicating that several portions had been consumed, with only one piece remaining.

According to information gathered by Bombo Radyo Bacolod, the adviser attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver to clear the obstruction, but it was unsuccessful. It is suspected that the “Chubby” candy may have caused the victim’s choking. The teachers are requesting to stop the dissemination of inaccurate information regarding the child’s death.

Meanwhile, choking is a condition that occurs when the airway is partially or completely blocked, inhibiting the flow of air to and from the lungs. It can be a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate intervention. Choking can occur in both adults and children and can be caused by various objects or food becoming lodged in the throat or airway.

When a person chokes, they may be unable to cough, speak, or breathe normally. They may show signs of distress, such as clutching their throat, gasping for breath, or turning blue. Choking can lead to lack of oxygen in the body, which can cause brain damage or even death if not addressed promptly.
