Price increases are partially a result of external factors. Food prices are being affected globally by global inflation, which has many causes including the conflict in Russia and Ukraine, supply-chain problems, and extreme weather occurrences.

Since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also serves as the agriculture secretary, the Philippine legislature wants to look into what caused the surge and holds him “directly accountable.”

During the holiday season, basic goods surged especially red onions reaching at P650 per kilo. It was followed by increase of eggs in the beginner of the year. Aside from onions and eggs, also rising in terms of price is fertilizer.

This prompted P3PWD Party-list nominee Rowena Guanzon to complain about the price of fertilizers. She recently took to the microblogging site, Twitter wherein she expressed her opinion with regard to the ongoing increase in the price of fertilizer.

According to her, a sack of fertilizer now cost P3,800. She claimed that each sack cost P720 a year ago. “Last yr fertilizer was P720 per sack now it is P3,800 #mgainutil,” she noted.

Her post earned reactions from the netizens. One netizen said: “Grabe naman ung DA Secretary Wala bang ginagawa sa problema ng agrikultura. Sibuyas, itlog, asukal, etc. Nugagawen sa sec nayan.”

Another netizen commented: “Hala…time to appoint a competent DA Sec, un magiisip how to ease un challenges sa agrikultura ntn ngayon. Tutal nagpapalit-palit na rin lang ang gobyerno ng ibang gabinete ngayon.”
